‘Burghley’ is a 47ft canal boat made by Harborough Marine sometime in the early 1970s. 4 berth (2 doubles / double and two singles)Safety Certificate to 2020Last Blacked March 2017She has been my project, home and pride and joy for the past 18 months. I have taken her from a pretty sad state and hopefully given the old girl a new lease of life. She is ready to cruise or move straight on-to and will come fully fitted out, . The sharp of eye will have noticed that I listed Burghley a couple of months back before withdrawing the listing as I just wasn’t ready to sell the old girl. Work have solved that dilemma by posting me abroad, and frankly Newbury to Bucharest is not a viable daily commute. If she doesn’t sell before I go i’ll put her into storage and re-sell in the summer. Burghley is of steel hull construction with a glass over plywood cabin. I have completely rebuilt the cabin structure removing all the old timber and replacing. Whilst rebuilding the cabin i redesigned the interior into a more open-plan layout and fully insulated the inside. The cabin now has two layers of ‘space foil bubble wrap’ and an inch of rock-wool, keeper her nice and cool in summer and amazingly warm in winter with the fire going.Burghley had a full survey performed two years ago, all recommended plating and further precautionary plating was performed in March 2018. I had no problems getting a fully comprehensive insurance policy to cover her on the strength of the work performed. Previous work prior to my ownership included a complete new bottom being put on, this is still in perfect condition with the chines vitally unworn. Engine:Power comes from a BMC 1500 that has performed faultlessly in my service, i keep it well serviced and it has never failed to start or let me down. It is amazingly frugal, in 18 months of living aboard i’ve used only 200 pounds or so of diesel. Electrical System:Burghley was intended for ‘off-grid’ living and is a predominantly 12V boat. 4 12V Leisure Batteries (18 months old);60 amp alternator;750W of solar panels on the roof, 500W through a 40A mppt controller charging the leisure battery bank and 250W through a 20A PWM controller charging the engine start battery;Full LED lighting throughout, dimmable strip lambs on two remote controls;6 2Amp USB ports distributed through the cabin; 3 12V sockets;Battery meter;1600W pure sine-wave inverter powering 2 sockets in the rear cabin.I have 3 large Solar Panels to be fitted which will be included if i haven’t gotten around to already installing them. All the individual systems terminate and are individually fused in the electrical cabin ate. The wiring is fully insulated dual core throughout, with both live and earth originating within the electrical cabinet, and is all significantly over spec. In the summer a couple of hours of charging will last me nearly two weeks. In the winter i generally need to charge for a couple of hours every 3 days. This will reduce once the solar panels are installed. Water System:Large plastic tank in the bow, lasts me easy two weeks including showers; Water pump and new accumulator in the fore cabin;Fully functional sinks in the galley and bathroom;Fully functional (if cosy) shower.Hot water provided by 55L calorifier (12 months old), 45 minutes of engine running gives you all the hot water you could want. Once hot the tank will keep the water hot for a good 24 hours. Pipework is all new. Heating:Boatman stove in the centre of the boat, new glass fitted and door seals replaced this year and the flu insulated. Once burning it kept the boat nice and toasty even through last years snow. Webasto ThermoTop C kit included but not fitted. Includes: – Webasto ThermoTop C, fuel pump, fuel tank, expansion tank, 2x radiators and a 7 day timer. Just needs installing to have regular central heating, I was intending to use it on a timer so I could get back to a lovely warm boat if I was working late. Cooking:Gas stove, 4 rings with grill and oven connected to two 13kg gas cylinders. These last me nearly a year! The cooker is fully functional and has proved more than capable of handling a full roast meal. The cooker is the only gas appliance onboard, all the pipework, regulator have been replaced this year and a bubble tester installed in the gas locker. This work was inspected and certified by Marcus Marine engineering and i have the safety certificate. Alarms / Emergency:Alarms: Burghley has three fire alarms (forecabin, aft cabin and in electrical cabinet) and three C02 alarms (forecabin and 2 in aft cabin). All are less than 2 years old and tested weekly. Extinguishers: Fire blanket in the galley, fire extinguishers in forecabin and aft cabin. Blige pump: Automatic bilge pump installed in the engine compartment, operated independently other the rest of the electrical system via a separate float switch. A second bilge pump is installed in a pot under the stern gland to catch the drips whilst cruising. LayoutStarting at the front.. Burghley has the iconic Harborough ‘window smasher’ bow, leading to a large cratch. The bow contains a decent sized locker I for storing coal and wood in the winter. The cratch has soft seating for 3 and a fold down table. There is generous storage under the seats and access to the interior of the bow. The fore cabin is open plan containing the galley and sitting area. The sitting area has seating for 4 or 5 and a removable table. The bench seat pulls out and coverts into a double bed. The cushions were recovered a few months ago and are immaculate. The galley has generous storage and a surprisingly decent cooker, Sunday roast easily manageable. The fridge is old but functional, its is of the 12/240V type (only wired in as 12V), so uses quite a bit of power. I only use it whilst cruising in the summer to avoid having to charge the batteries every night. In the winter i used a cool box under the cratch to store perishables, In the middle of the boat is the bathroom and shower, the bathroom door opens out to block off the rear cabin from the font. The shower is a domestic thermostatic type and is only a few months old, and works perfectly. The shower drains into a plastic sump which is them pumped overboard, The toilet is a portapotti. Purchased a year ago but only used for the first time this summer so is still clean (50 pounds for a new one if you don’t fancy this one). The rear cabin serves as the master bedroom and primary storage for clothes ect. The bed is an Ikea ‘Hemnes’ day bed with storage, This comes with two mattresses and folds out into a king sized double. Heating is provided by a boatman multi-fuel stove which is sited just inside the aft cabin. I cheerfully survived the worst of the great British winter using just the stove, getting the boat up to 25C is no bother and 30+ is easily doable in the aft cabin with the centre door shut. The large cupboard by the aft door contains the calorifier, expansion tank and electrical cabinet. The double back doors lead out to the cruiser stern. The deck plates have been replaced with aluminium checker plate which lifts off to access the engine and gearbox. Burghley has two bilge pumps fitted, one large pump with an automatic switch in the main bilge and a second smaller pump in a catch can under the stern gland. SnagsLike anything rapidly approaching 50 Burghley has her quirks. I have sorted the vast majority them however she is an old boat and will require some love from time to time. – the front and rear covers are serviceable but past their best;- last blacked March 2017, i’d be looking to do it again next summer;- some odd corners inside require the wood trim completing;- alu checker plate above the engine could do with some rubber to further sound proof it. If you have read this far congratulations! There is bound to be loads I have forgotten, this is a reluctant sale of my home and pride and joy.
