Freeman 26 Canal and River Boat. It was built around 1969 with a petrol Watermota engine. I bought it 3 years ago and paid for a full survey and initial improvement work. I sailed it from the Ribble estuary up to Burscough via the Rufford branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. I’ve used it for occasional day trips and weekend ‘camping’.
I have not used the boat for over 12 months.
The boat is on a long term mooring on the Leeds Liverpool canal at Burscough. It is in a great easily accessible spot to get down to Liverpool and around the beautiful West Lancashire countryside.
I fitted a small wood burner with insulated flue to provide heat over the winter in place of the old gas stove. The flue exits in the hole previously used by the ventilator for the stove. The original cover for the ventilator and the cupboard to house the stove and gas pipe connections are still on the boat if you wanted to put a stove back in. To brighten the boat up I put a couple of coats of white paint over the heavily varnished dark wood interior as shown in the pictures. This can be easily removed if you wanted to return it to the original dark wood. The electric lights work but water pump for the internal sink needs replacing.
The engine has not been serviced but was working well last year. The engine has not been started for over a year; the petrol may not be clean and it should be drained before running the engine.
I refreshed some of the external paint and varnish 3 years ago and it could do with a touch up again now. The boat has a dry and comfortable interior.
It’s a lovely old boat that needs ongoing care and attention. It will need an updated safety certificate and engine service in due course.
