Tomkat is a very unique 40ft all steel narrowboat. It’s one of very few Springer-based vessels with a flat bottom, making it an excellent vessel for cruising with. It’s incredibly bright and spacious inside, and mechanically in perfect condition. It has an air-cooled lister SR3 engine, which means almost no engine maintenance required (just keep an eye on the oil). It is actively cooled by a fan, meaning it’ll never overheat.I bought this boat as a shell several years ago, and completely transformed the interior, also adding solar, replacing the engine and batteries, and much more. There’s an outdoor panel with controls for the bilge, horn, light, etc, and plenty of room for seating.Entry to the boat is via 2-3 steps. You’ll immediately enter the office/workspace, which my partner and I used as digital nomads/artists. There’s a large desk with USB and mains plugs, somewhere to hang coats and store shoes, some bookshelves, and a small wardrobe which also contains the electrical controls. There’s extra storage under the steps, too. Throughout the boat you’ll find unique antique bits of furniture and accessories.Down a corridor, there’s the door to the bathroom. There’s a cassette toilet (2 cassettes included), a lovely handmade sink, a full-size shower and lots of storage.Further down the corridor, there’s a galley and bed area. The large 6-metre-long kitchen counter was originally used in the science lab of an old private school, and it’s full of character. There are matching shelves, and an integrated sink. A boiler sits next to the freestanding gas cooker. We just use a camping fridge in the galley, but you can easily add a domestic or 12v fridge here instead. Across from the kitchen, we have a sofa bed, but this could also fit a small dining table and chairs. The bed, custom-built for the van, sits at the end of the kitchen – positioned at the front of the boat for the very best views from bed. There’s an enormous amount of storage space under the bed, and shelving/cupboards at the fore end.You can step from the bed up to the front deck through an alarmed UPVC fully-opening fire door. There’s a small fore deck, just enough space for two to sit with a morning coffee or lunch.
