Four on Six
Trad style narrow boat with steel hull and superstructure, believed to have been built at Hapton Boatyard in 1987.
Draught 2’ 2”
CRT registration number
507885. The boat is on hard standing and not licensed.
To give a good flavour of this boat’s undoubted charm, here
is the vendor’s story of his time in a close relationship with it.
“Currently on blocks out of water at Shire Cruisers, Sowerby
Bridge, to be transported upon completion of sale. Loading and transport to be
coordinated through Shire Cruisers.
Four On Six is 42ft and narrowbeam built in 1987. Bought
used in May 2017 whilst in water with pontoon mooring. Intensive work on the
interior and infrastructure first 18 months:
Complete new gas system from gas bottle throughout; bubble
tester, bulkhead connections, valves, taps, pipe, fittings, boiler, fitted
Fully re-wired including safety circuit breaker, LED spot
lights, double plug sockets, 2 way light switches.
Re-fitted plumbing from water pump from bow to stern,
including; kitchen taps and shower taps + shower head and washing machine.
It has a 3 cylinder Lister Diesel Engine which runs every
time. Could do with an oil change and general once over, engine in good condition.
Craned out of water in January 2019 after water started to
seep through the rear end starboard side. Hull is in poor condition. Ballast is
concrete throughout (will need to be reduced when overhauling hull due to
weight). Water tank is within the hull and the integrity of the steel in the
bow front locker is also in poor condition.
Having worked from the inside out, the cabin is not
complete, however, it is fitted with a new gas system, including water heater,
plumbing and electrics, new wiring and lighting along with double plug sockets
and 2-way light switches in 2018.
All kitchen appliances included: Washing machine (Beko
& 6Kg Slim line), Russel Hobbs Fridge Freezer (50cm), LPG Cooker (Calor Gas
Twin Cavity Gas Cooker, with safety valves and glass top). Instruction manuals
for all appliances, including Cointra Optima Gas Water Heater, are included.
All appliances bought in 2018.
After the survey and BSS Examination in 2019 (no current
safety certificate, however, report shows not too much needed for a pass), I
decided to have a larger narrowboat built from the drawing board up and have
since become a permanent cruiser. Four On Six has been a great education for me
learning about the infrastructure on a narrowboat and much time and money has
been invested in this process. Time for me to move on and offer Four On Six to
someone who wishes to carry on with it.
Here at Sowerby Bridge Marina, Shire Cruisers, there is
support in guidance and the organisation of craning and transport in coordination
with Shire Cruisers.
This offer does not come with a mooring and within good
reason, flexibility and good sense awaits for the organisation of collection.”
Original plate thickness:
Base 3/16” (4.7mm)
Hull sides 3/16” (4.7mm)
This boat is in fair condition inside, with an interesting,
unfinished refit. The hull needs extensive repair, which would be within
the ability of a competent amateur welder. The internal refit could be completed
according to the existing good plan, or it’s not too late to change. Professional over-plating is commonly done and a number of companies have specialist facilities for doing this. Some publish prices per foot.
The engine is a classic Lister SR3, engine number 703SR321
with Lister oil-operated gearbox, around 16 years older than the boat.
This boat is being sold by ebay auction, through Shire
Cruisers on behalf of its owner.
The boat is sold as a project and without warranty of any
kind. Information in this presentation is supplied by the vendor, our own
inspection, and a survey (see below) and is believed to be correct. Buyers are strongly recommended to examine the boat, and study the reports mentioned below.
A hull survey was carried out in June 2019. This survey
recommended over-plating most of the bottom and parts of the hull sides and stern, replacement of the weedhatch, repairs to the rudder tube, gas locker and water tank, along
with other detailed points. Removal of the concrete ballast would enable a better job on the steelwork. The work envisaged is extensive. The survey
provides an excellent framework for planning repairs. If you’d like a copy, please ask. You must understand that the survey was personal to the vendor, and you cannot rely on it – for this, you must commission your own survey. Alternatively, you could ask a specialist repairer to advise and quote.
There is also an inspection report (June 2019) which lists work required to gain a Boat Safety Certificate. The items listed are not onerous, and would be taken care of in a wider refit. Copies of this report will be supplied on request.
Prospective buyers are
encouraged to view the boat.

from Shire Cruisers premises within three months of completion. Road transport
can be arranged by the buyer, or through Shire Cruisers. Lifting will be
carried out by Shire Cruisers at a time when a bulk lift is being arranged, at its standard rate of
