For sale is a 48 foot Butty style narrow boat. I bought this boat with the hope of living on her with my fiancee and dog. We spent a couple of nights aboard and, although the dog likes the solid fuel stove, the fiancee did not like the night on the boat during storm Dennis, at its peak. I bought this boat as a project liveaboard – which is exactly what it is. The potential here is huge, and the boat comes pretty loaded to start with. I will do my best to list the haves and have nots!
This is a lovely boat with a wonderful history. Originally built in 1935 as a 100 foot Wooden Butty and used on the Grand Union Canal as a working boat. It was sunk for preservation, and raised again in the 1970’s where, in 1976, she was cut in half to produce two traditional liveaboard narrow boats at 48 foot each. This boat was the original foward end. The superstructure was rebuit in 1992/3 and, from what I understand, every owner has updated and maintained the boat. (As can be seen from the folders and folders of documentation relating the the work that has been done – even down to the planks changed and when.) This is a true piece of British Heritage – suitable for someone to project or just live aboard.
The boat has a working solid fuel stove (Morso Squirrel), which heats the hot water and provides central heating throught the boat. (Even though it was windy and very cold outside we managed to get ourselves pretty toasty, and it was surprising to see how quickly it warmed up!)
Included within the electrics onboard are 4 leisure batteries and 1 starter battery charged by 2x CTEK chargers (300, 200).
There are 12v LED lights and 12 volt sockets.
Shore Power with 13amp (home plug sockets all over the place, with additional 4 way extensions.
12V car stereo (2x ceiling mounted speakers)
12v Working Bilge Pump,
The galley has been fitted with a new BUSH fridge, 2 burner gas hob, microwave and sink – with hot and cold water.
There is a 250 litre water tank forward and an 85 litre diesel tank.
Needs new cassette toilet
The engine was rebuilt 2014/15, it is a Lister 1957 (2 cylinder). It is in good, excellent condition for its age. I have had a little play and I have got it to turn over and I am pretty sure this engine would run, apparently last running around 18 months ago. I am told the boat doesn’t reverse well, (what boat does?!) The exhaust was changed from chimney to out the back!
The Hull was last blackened 12-18 months ago. Two years prior to that the previous owner added a number of layers of coal tar.
There are leaks here and there from the windows/topsides (as you would imagine staying on the boat in the storm) mainly confined to the aft end of the boat and the outboard edges although one mushroom will need to be sealed aft. The 12V bilge pump works. The boat lists aft and to the port, there are 16x to 20x 56lb weights aboard to shuffle around! There are a few of the aft end, internal floor boards (bathroom and bedroom) that need to be replaced at some point they are a bit springy. A few of the internal wall & ceiling linings could do with being replaced at some point, mainly aft again! The boat has loads of tools, spanners for the engine, saws, consumables, paint, stern grease, & waterways stuff such as lock key, gas bottles etc.
There is no BSC on the boat, but I have spoken to a couple of BSS inspectors locally and the rates are 165-185. There is no charge for the retest, after work carried out.
What you’re getting here is a lot of boat for not a lot of money. This boat would suit a liveaboard with some DIY skills, or someone with an understanding of boats and engines that wants a project!
The boat is located at Pillings Lock Marina, Loughbough. Mooring is around approx 200 a month or 240 for liveaboard. It has mooring paid until the end of the month.
Please no time wasters. Winning bidder will transfer 20% non-refundable deposit by bank transfer within 24 hours of winning or it will be relisted. I am based at the other end of the country from the boat, so I will arrange to be there to sign the bill of sale with the new owner. Please ask any questions before bidding.
I am around for the next couple of days (16th/17th February) for any viewings. All pictures taken in the last 7 days! 07365 915566On 16-Feb-20 at 16:38:15 GMT, seller added the following information:
