Spend Spring Bank Holiday week on your own boat every year for little more than the price of a single weeks hire. Sounds too good to be true, but we’ve enjoyed that for many years now. So much so, that we’ve gone on to having our own boat outright. Reluctantly, it’s now time to sell our share in Strait & Narrow. For sale is week 22 on the Narrowboat ‘Strait & Narrow’, a 58ft Semi-trad Narrowboat which can sleep 6 (at a push), but better with 2 or 4. There is a fixed double bed which extends for a little more width, and a double dinette which seats 4 or sleeps 2. Anyone else is on the lounge settee or an inflatableForward of the bedroom is the bathroom; complete with shower, sink and pump out toilet. Next is the galley, which is well fitted with gas oven / grill / hob and a sink looking out through the side window. Opposite the sink is an opening side hatch which is usually surrounded by hungry ducks. Further forward is the dinette then lounge, complete with settee, TV, CD/Radio and wood burning stove. The boat is run by its owners (no management company to pay) and held in week shares. Each owner ‘owns’ their own week – it doesn’t change, there’s no lottery of which week you get this year, your week is your own. In return you pay your share of the maintenance cost in proportion to the number of weeks you hold, currently £330 per week, per year. This sale includes this years maintenance contribution – there’s no more money for you to pay out this year, other than the diesel, gas, coal or other consumable you use on your cruise. An owners’ AGM is held every year, just before Christmas. A forward plan for boat maintenance is usually the main topic, with the boat enjoying an annual program of refurbishment. As an owner, there may be circumstances where additional money or volunteers are required for the program and this is discussed and agreed amongst the owners. In our time of ownership we have never had to supply additional funds, but you must bare in mind that it’s your boat!Current mooring is within Heritage Marina at Scholars Green on the Macclesfield Canal. We’ve found this a central location for a weeks cruising on the Trent & Mersey, Peak Forest or Caldon canals. The option to change marinas is always discussed at the AGM.Once you purchase the share your details will be passed to the boat chairman who will forward you an ownership contract. Once completed, your holiday cruise is just around the corner. Wk22 handover day is Sunday 30th May this year. Because of Covid measures the boat is to be returned to the marina on the following Saturday. Under normal circumstances the boat cruises Sunday to Sunday. It’s your responsibility to clean the boat and prepare it for the next owners. Most commonly, this achieved by purchasing a valet from the marina. For this share it’s a real advantage if you have experience of canal boating, particularly with Covid measures, as there’s no one waiting for you at the handover and there’s no basic training as you would get if you hired a boat. There is a website with more detailed information and some (older) pictures of the boat:http://www.straitandnarrow.co.uk/
