“VULCAN” – 20FT STEEL CANAL BOAT – For sale as a project £6950
“Vulcan” is a 20ft all-steel canal boat, originally steam-powered and currently being converted to electric drive, now offered for sale as a project nearing completion. A comprehensive file on conversion to electric drive is included. Built by Alan Salisbury in the early 2000s, this craft has been owned by us since 2005, and has never been permanently afloat, having been used as a day boat launched from its trailer as and when required. Consequently, although in need of blacking the hull steelwork is in generally good condition, with some minor rust patches but no significant pitting. The roof and cabin-sides were repainted in 2012, and although now in need of a clean the boat has been kept under covers while on hard-standing.
“Vulcan” briefly comprises, short fore-deck with water tank below (not connected); characterful compact cabin, with opening roof hatch and scumbled timber walls, also containing cushioned bench seat (potentially converting to an overnight berth). A porta-potti style (“Bi-pot”) toilet situated below the bench seat. Door to covered rear area, panel sides to the forward part (would benefit from interior painting). Wheel steering with motor control panel. Large battery box, Lynch-style Agni DC electric motor (instruction manual available) connected to shaft driving large fixed propeller aft, electronic motor controller, 48v charger, consumer unit and 16amp socket for connection to shore-power. Several storage lockers and large bench seat to rear. Security grills and useful outboard motor bracket also provided.
To complete the conversion a number of tasks await completion, including:
Refit two portholes, glass and rims provided
Fit and seal timber framed “perspex”-style windows in side panels
Purchase and fit 4 x 12v batteries fitted in series and fit solar panels if required
Fit headlamp, interior lights and horn and complete 12v domestic wiring circuits
Canvas side and rear panels to be fabricated and fitted (if required)
“Vulcan” is currently on a galvanised custom-built trailer on hard-standing in North Shropshire, close to the Montgomery Canal. The boat could remain on hard-standing at a cost of £75 pcm for completion by a new owner, and boat launch facilities are available on site (direct to the canal). Alternatively the boat could be removed from site – on a car transporter or Hiab lorry. The purpose-built trailer is included in the sale, and is perfectly serviceable as a yard trailer, but please note it is not considered roadworthy at present, as it requires attention to the suspension, tyres and brakes.
“Vulcan” provides an ideal opportunity to complete as an electric-drive craft, possibly solar-powered, or perhaps convert back to a steam launch, or maybe simply to use as a “butty” to be towed by a narrowboat. The boat is for sale only because other commitments have prevented completion of its conversion and subsequent use. Although not currently holding a boat safety certificate the simple fit-out and absence of l.p. (“Calor”) gas and other cabin appliances should make this very straightforward.
Sale price: “Vulcan” is offered for sale at £6,950 ono. All enquiries via email in the first instance: firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 01691 831672.
Please note: these details have been prepared in good faith and are believed to be materially correct. They do not, in of themselves constitute a contract. The boat is sold free of any encumbrances and with no loans secured on it. No warranties in relation to the craft or its fixtures and fittings are expressed or implied, and the boat is sold as seen. Potential purchasers should satisfy themselves on all matters by inspection or otherwise before making any offer. A bill of sale will be provided on completion of the purchase, once funds are received and cleared through my account (bank transfer preferred).
