After over 18 years of fun, enjoyment, adventure both
cruising and successfully racing Tango, I have decided to retire from sailing
and sell her. She is located at
Liverpool marina and remains in commission being sailed as recently as Sunday
July 7th. 2019. I raced her
successfully over many years winning numerous trophies with Liverpool Yacht
Club. Her most successful year was 2010
when we were the overall handicap winner of the prestigious Liverpool to Isle
of Man midnight race, and the Round Anglesey race and became that year’s
overall offshore series winner. Tango is
a very versatile yacht that can be raced offshore with a crew of 5, her latest
2017 IRC handicap was 0.848. For more leisurely
cruising e.g. over to Ireland or North Wales from Liverpool, a crew of three is
probably optimum. She is also rigged and I have frequently sailed her
singlehanded.
Tango was constructed in FRP by John Baker in 1980. She had a full insurance inspection in 2015
which concluded that: “The vessel has been soundly constructed and appears in
general good order.” The inspection produced several minor recommendations
which have been implemented. As a protective measure I had her epoxy coated in
2001, and she was effectively re-epoxy coated when her anti- fouling was
changed to Coppercoat in 2008. This is still working well, which means she
doesn’t need to be re-antifouled each year, and can be kept clean by regular
in-situ scrubbing throughout the year
Tango is 26ft long with a beam of 9’ 3”. Unlike most Super Seals she has a fixed fin
keel giving her a maximum draft of 5’ 6.” She is powered by an inboard Vire 7hp
single cylinder 2-stroke petrol engine, this has proved more than adequate to
cope with tidal streams in the Mersey which can reach 6kts. She is fitted with
a 2 blade (Varifold) folding propeller. A 70 litre fuel tank gives her a
motoring range of up to 100miles.
She was fitted with a new Z spars mast and spars in 2005
with 6mm Dyform standing rigging. Her current Main sail and a135% furling Genoa
were from Goucher Sails in 2010, additionally she has two spinnakers, a storm
jib and emergency forestay. The main has
three slab reefs and like all control lines these are run back to the cockpit.
The main sheet has low and high tension adjustment and is mounted on a
traveller. The Genoa sheets are controlled
by two speed Lewmar 40 winches. Two 16-2 Antal winches, on the cabin roof,
serve as spinnaker / halyard and slab reefing winches. She has a VHF radio,
wind speed indicator, depth and water speed/log indicator and a compass. The GPS device is wired into the radio.
She has five full length berths two in the fore cabin, port
and starboard berths with lee cloths in the main cabin and a quarter berth in
the stern. In cruising mode she has a spray hood. An Origo two burner spirit stove provides
cooking facilities whilst avoiding LPG gas bottles on board. A Porta Potti style
w/c is fitted in the head. A 50 litre
water tank supplies the hand basin in the galley and heads. She has two 110
amphr batteries charged from the engine’s alternator and solar panels trickle
chargers satisfactorily maintain the battery charge even during the winter. A
7.5 kg folding anchor with 7m of 5mm chain and 40m of 1.2 inch warp is stored
in the anchor hatch in the bow.
Tango is a well-equipped and versatile yacht that will make
an excellent “ready to go” first cruiser or offshore racing yacht.
