Hippocampus
East Anglian Bermudan Sloop
Built in 1963, Hippocampus is a lovely example of
an Alan Buchanan designed East Anglian wooden cruising yacht. With beautiful
lines, when restored she’ll make a good family cruiser for up to four people.
East Anglians are always a welcome sight at classic regattas and these pretty
craft have stood the test of time very well and continue to flourish
Alan Buchanan
Alan Buchanan was one of Britain’s most prolific
and successful yacht designers. He designed 22 boats, including yachts that won
the Admiral’s Cup, Cowes Week, and the Fastnet Race. A naval architect and
aeronautical engineer who worked as a draftsman on bombers and flying boats
during the war, his reputation for exceptional design of fast, seaworthy and
beautiful yachts was legendary. A set of
design plans are included in the sale.
Current condition
After having a number of long term owners who
maintained and sailed in her regularly, Hipppocampus was left unattended for a
while. She is mostly sound with the hull being watertight however a comprehensive
refit is required. The main task will be to replace the current deck.
Hippocampus has be partially stripped in readiness for
restoration work to start. She comes with a full suit of sails, two anchors,
and a working Beta diesel engine.
She is moored on the River Medway at Upnor. The
successful buyer will need to arrange for motor passage/tow or lifting for
onward road transport as soon as the purchase is complete. This is reflected by the low asking price.
