Here is Sard, a twenty foot wooden yacht built here in Southampton by Camper and Nicholson around 1938 and 1939. She was hidden away during the war years then was launched soon after that all ended. The Yacht has been in Southampton all of its life and was one of three, although the others were 22 and 18ft so all are a little different. Sard was the only one built strictly to plan and has a single long keel which is lead. There are legs but I do not use these preferring to just have her lean against the piles, nicely tucked in with her fenders. She has a stout cover which is not shown but keeps the weather off well. The original owner did not keep her that long and she had only a few local owners, I was told that she was the first yacht to be in the Marchwood yacht Club, but have never checked that out so could be wrong there. I know she did spend may years there but has been at Eling for at least thirty years now. She is featured in a short movie of Totton in the 60s where a happy family appear to be paddling her round in the sunshine.https://www.facebook.com/colin.lee.12/videos/866715830097154/We bought the boat late in 2004 and have enjoyed sailing her enormously. She has bronze Turner ratchet roller reefing on the main and a nice small bronze Wickham martin furler on the jib. I used to use old seagull motors but then bought a fairly new Honda BF5 which has been faultless. There are basic electrics on the boat running from a car battery in the cockpit which can be charged from the engine. a swith panel inside runs to a cabin light, mast head/steaming light and powers up the basic VHF unit with mast head antenna. The original “sestrel” gimbled compass and matching baromter and clock in the cabin are nice touches but it is very basic yachting. It’s easy, fun and she is sound, dry and very seaworthy. Included in the sale will be:2006 Honda BF5 outboard, proper sail power one, long shaft with DC charging and 12.5L remote fuel tank.Three sets of sails, two old and well used, one set brand new in my loft at home.9 ft traditonal style GRP dinghy “Sardine” with oars and rowlocks.Steel work cradle, pulled apart and but is very useful and can be quickly assembled. A little rusty, but very handy, if you want it!3 very lightly used life jacketsStainless Meths stove, odds and ends.Pretty much all ready to sail away.
