Cobra 850 sail boat. Rigging for single handed sailing. Orginally professionally built. Not a home build.
I purchased this boat in 2013. I was inspired that i can challenge the status quo of a throw away society. Showing that you dont have to spend 100000s on a boat to enjoy sailing i was inspired by other sailors and builders.
Now she is now a great safe boat modernised with a number of improvements. I did this not for reward but to show could be done.. She is 8.69m with a 2.9m beam. She has twin keels 1.1m draft. Both keels are encapsulated with no keel bolts.
She is rigged for single handed sailing and is easy to sail.
She has no osmosis. The hull has been epoxied and covered with copper antifoul. The copper antifoul lasts 10 years. She is a dry boat ( number of electric and manual bilge pumps – just in case) and fitted out for that week or weekend sail. She has a deep safe cockpit for a family.
From the pictures you will see boat is 5 berth. She was reupholstered in 2014. In 2015 she had a major refit; new standing rigging, new 12v bow thruster and electric windlass. The latter two are controlled from the cockpit area. Inside I have fitted a shower, inside the heads and a gas fired hot water system with 12v powered water supply from the 100lt tank. In 2018 a new electric 12v toilet.
On board there is a 12v cold plate fridge and a smev oven, twin hob and grill and microwave. There is a LCD 12v TV/DVD/USB and throughout full LED lighting extending into the cockpit area. Inside there is a removable table, this can be placed inside or outside in the cockpit. There is a full chart table; forepeak facing. Inside there is a propex gas central heating system which was installed in 2015.
Over the last year the boat has been rewired with a split charging system that will enable the two banks of batteries to be charged either under engine or shore power. In addition the boat has a rutland wind turbine and 200 watt flexible solar dodgers (2016). Both are able to fully maintain the batteries at anchor without using the engine.
In 2016 the bukh dv10 was replaced by a reconditioned Bukh dv20. At this time I replaced the prop shaft, engine mountings and prop. the stern bearing was found to be ok. I also replaced the stern tube rubber and replaced the stern gland packing. I also renewed and replaced the fuel tank and pipes. Whilst rewiring I changed the wiring loom and installed a Sterling advanced regulator which leads to the Sterling split charger.
Instrument wise. There is a Garmin Gps with uk maps, linked to a clipper NASA AIS and can be remotely read from the cockpit on the Clipper NASA repeater. Inside the chart table is a Clipper NASA speed an log and also a CLIPPER NASA Battery monitor and NAVTEX. On a rotating arm out into the cockpit is a Garmin fish finder ( for those that like to sail and fish) and a CLIPPER NASA wind director. Outside there is a second NASA depth and speed log as well as two bulk head compasses. On board is also a raymarine remote control autohelm. On board is also a JRC radar.
The sails are in good condition the head sail is new 2015. The main doesn’t need replacing. To hold the head sail there is a stack pack with lazy jacks. Outside I have installed (2014) a blue spray hood and in 2015 I have made a full cockpit cover. this enables either the cockpit to be open or covered. On the rear there are two handmade davits (2015)
Outside I have upgraded the steaming light/anchor Nav lights to LEDs. Around the rails I have installed netting and I often sail with my youngest son as well as number of lashing on points in the cockpit.
The boat is currently on a swing mooring and with notice can be viewed at any time.
You may ask why I am selling it when I have spent so much on it. Well the reason I am selling is that I have, although love to sail on it, been more and more busy at work and time to actually use it has reduced. if you are looking for a encapsulated bilge keel then this boat is a good item. Since she is a bilge keel drying out moorings are more accessible and cheaper. Ideal also for coastal sailing. if you would like a view or want to know more information please ask. She is a great craft.
