ELIZABETHAN 31History:The Elizabethan 31 was introduced in 1968, as a long-keeled family cruiser. She was the first commercial design by David Thomas, who later went on to design the Sigma and several Hunters. Around 40 sloop rigged Elizabethan 31s were built by Peter Webster Ltd., though after the company’s closure in 1976 the moulds were used to produce additional hulls, mostly home completed. In 1970 a ketch-rigged version was built, with centre cockpit and a higher deck moulding, giving much greater headroom in the saloon, as well as a separate two-berth aft cabin. The long-keel hull is exactly the same as the sloops, with 50% ballast ratio. Elizabethan 31s are well regarded as long-distance cruisers with several having made notable ocean passages. The yachts information:This yacht is a beautiful classic built in 1970, with a spacious living accommodation that can be sailed singled handed around the world and it will only ever increase in value. This beautifully designed and built Elizabethan 31 requires a new engine as the previous owner forgot to open the water intake sea cock and over heated it. The engine is a Volvo MD7B and is not fit for rebuild although has some new parts fitted to it i.e a starter motor. There are several second hand or reconditioned Volvo engines available for around £1000. I see no reason once an engine is fitted, anodes changed and anti-fouled, that this yacht couldn’t be sailed. However, it does require tidying up inside and out and could be a useable on going project. This yacht comes with two sets of good conditioned sails and rigging. All the decking and wood work is of a very good standard. She is tiller steer and shaft drive with a cruising speed of 5 knots and a max speed of 7 knots. She holds a 22 Gallon water tank and a 13.9 Gallon diesel fuel tank. The dimensions of the yacht are LOA: 9.45mLWL: 7.37mBEAM: 2.84mDraft: 1.42mDisplacement: 5080kgHeadroom: 1.85mShe berths 4 people with 2 single berths and 1 double berth and contains one heads. These yachts sell for over £12,000 in excellent condition so no matter what is spent refurbishing her, it will be well worth it.
