For sale our much loved Hurley 24/70 (Black Friar). We have enjoyed and cherished her as a family for the last five years. We knew nothing of sailing when we bought her but with a fair amount or reading and some helpful YouTube videos we became fairly accomplished sailors. Designed by Ian Anderson, Black Friar is a very capable yacht and is remarkably easy to sail (even for the new beginner),She has been fitted out over the years with many upgraded items to enable shorthand sailing (I will list these in more detail later) her large encapsulated fin keel gives her great stability in the water and high freeboard means she is a comfortable dry sail even in relatively choppy waters. Her long waterline in comparison to other boats in this class give her an advantage in the water and she is able to keep pace (and sometimes) out maneuver even larger vessels. (providing some often comical expressions of disbelief as we have sailed by). She takes her power from a large deck sweeping Genoa (front sail) and a high aspect mainsail, this allows for a shorter boom length and as such does not encroach into the cockpit area (meaning she is a very safe boat for young families etc as there is no need to duck when tacking) She is also exceptionally good at sailing close to the wind. these sails have both been upgraded and have only seen service for 5 seasons.Black Friar’s accommodations are also unusual for boats of this class as she has 6 foot standing headroom in the main saloon (usually only found in boats over 30 feet in length) and has sleeping accommodation for four, comprising of a large double V berth and two single berth all 6’4 in length. My wife, two adult sons and myself have enjoyed many a weekend stay away and although a little cramped at times with four adults on board still provides plenty of space to relax due to having a full compliment of made to measure cockpit cushions (great for whiling away a sunny evening, glass of wine in hand). She comes equip with a small but functional galley comprising of a small sink, coolbox and 2 burner alcohol stove. There is plenty of storage for cooking and eating utensils etc. and even a small dining/chart table She has a fully enclosed heads (sea toilet, recently replaced) and a small hanging wardrobe. The interior woodwork has been restored to a high standard and is beautifully varnished.Black Friar has had many major works over the years the most important to mention are the full restoration and re-epoxied hull meaning there is no osmosis, strengthened chain plates and sympathetically re enforced coach roof (many hurleys suffered with mast compression and were fitted with a simple pole through the cabin!). She has also had a full engine refit at a cost of nearly £3,000 in 2014 (she will happily motor along at 5/6 knots using just 1 liter per hour for those windless days). she has been fitted with lazy jacks and stack pack system and 2 lewmar self tailing winches. She has a full compliment of cockpit equipment comprising of wind speed/speed/depth,digital compass and VHF radio. She comes with all the usual sundries fenders, various mooring lines, anchor and 35 meters of chain. We have a comprehensive folder of history showing many other works and minor upgrades over the years. As you can see this boat has been truly cherished and is ready to sail away, I have not personally seen another Hurley in such good condition for her year (she has also received many compliments to her condition) and she has many more good years in her to come. our sole reason for sale is the recent purchase of another boat. Black Friar currently is moored at Torquay and while I am led to believe there is a waiting list for available berths it may be worth registering your interest with the harbour master should you so desire to keep her within Torbay. The vessel will need to be removed from our berth within 28 of sale as we require the mooring for our new boat.Questions are welcome through Ebay or if you prefer to my wife via Text on 07773556246.below is the link to a short video of my wife and I sailing in to Anstey’s Cove in Torbay. https://youtu.be/SG_Z6tAIVt0
