Jeanneau Sunway 21
More details and photos on request
I have owned Jenn-oh for 7 years and in that time I have
made some significant upgrades and improvements to get her up to a condition
where she can easily cross the Channel or be raced competitively. Originally
designed to have all the characteristic of a 30’ yacht: she has a much bigger
cockpit than yachts of a similar size. She is a delight to sail either
singlehanded or with up to 5 adults. All lines lead to the cockpit through 6
clutches and 2 winches. She will handle heavy seas well considering her size
and weight and I have reefed her right down for F8s and been quite confident of
her ability. Since she is essentially a big dinghy, she is also ideal for beginners
or the less experienced as well as for family outings.
Down below is ‘cosy’ but has everything you might need. 2 x
2m bunks and a V berth all have new cushions with memory foam toppers. A table for
dining or chart work that cleaver slides up the mast support out of the way.
Plenty of storage under the bunks for personal items, wet weather gear, tools
and unused sails etc. The galley is under the companionway step, slides out and
is surprisingly big. Room for a 2 burner stove and a washing up bowl, cutlery and
crockery as well as food supplies for a long weekend. Head room is limited as
you would expect but everything is in reach from one central standing point.
The headlining, however, has proved time and again to beat me, with help from
it’s old friend gravity! I simply use a can as spray adhesive every season to
keep it in place.
I have sailed her just over 2000Nm throughout the South
Coast and Channel Isles and also raced her every year in the Round the Island
Race (in the same class as 30-40 footers!) with mixed results (my fault, not
hers!) but she certainly punches well above her weight, particularly across and
down wind. Close hauled, she will sit comfortably between 4.5 & 6kts but
when the kite or asymmetric are up, she will plane quite readily.
Launching and retrieval is so easy if you use a slip way
steep enough. Putting the mast up and down is a 3 person job however. The
little engine has been great, often punching against tides for hours on end
without complaint. When the winds are too light for sailing, it will push you
along at about 4-5knts on a thimbleful of fuel.
Being nearly 30 years old, the hull does show some battle
scars from previous owners. These are nothing to be worried about but I didn’t want
someone turning up to take a look at her expecting brand-new-perfection.
She has been featured in Practical Boat Owner Magazine 3
times and I am happy to supply copies of these too.
Current finger pontoon berthing available to end Dec 2018. Further
agreements are to be negotiated with the marina by new owner.
Any inspection most welcome.
