For sale is our lovely Leisure 17, Pennod Newydd (Welsh for ‘new chapters’).We have had some fantastic times on Pennod Newydd and had it not been for a house move / relocation and a massive change of lifestyle, we would not be selling her.We have owned Pennod Newydd for about five years and in that time we have enjoyed many short breaks and long holidays on the Broads, in the lakes and on the high seas.During this time we have worked out exactly what we need and have made various modifications to make our life easier.We put two reefs in the main sail and set up a single line reefing system along the boom, we also found a storm jib with a wired luff which reduces the need to unclip the Genoa in a gale; we simply drop the Genoa and tie it down then haul up the jib – its done in just a couple of minutes and it significantly reduces risk.We created a simple mast raising and lowering system which allows us to drop the mast and be under a bridge in just a few minutes – something that we were glad of on the Broads.We created a pole extension for the trailer tow hitch which allows us to push the trailer out into the deeper water, we fitted side docking poles too. Since making this modification we have never struggled to launch and recover and we’ve never got our feet wet either.Pennod Newydd is a bilge keel with a draft of 2′ 2″ (0.65cm). There are many debates about the benefits of bilge keels over singles and visa-versa but as a trailer sailer, bilge keels tick all the boxes and having spent hours maximising my tacks by skimming the reeds, i can only sing the praises of the shallow draft bilge keels.Leisure 17’s were built in the mid 60’s and are tough, robust and renowned for their stability.
