This beautiful, traditional Padstow Lugger, yawl “Merlin” was made by the company Padstow Sea Boats in 1988. The design is based on the Cornish pilchard fishing boats. It is made from GRP and requires minimum maintenance. She has wooden spars and teak and mahogany trim.It is the perfect boat for exploring estuaries and rivers with a family on board. She is stable with a weighty steel centreplate to reduce healing. I have sailed her with my family (including 2 dogs) extensively around Salcombe, the Solent and the Norfolk Broads. Merlin is a very attractive boat and gets plenty of attention. You will see from the images below that she has a modified rig, based on a Laurent Giles Jollyboat, comprising of: a jib on roller reefing; a mainsail, gaff rigged with a boom and gooseneck; and a mizzen rigged from a bumpkin (post sticking out from the transom). She sails beautifully and has a good turn of speed. When it is windy, I tend to sail with foresail and mizzen only. She is great under power. I use a 3.5 hp long shaft (long shaft is a must) outboard (not included). I never need more than 1/4 of the power to reach hull speed. The boat comes with a Mersea, Rapide GP16 Roller Trailer which I bought (new) for Merlin in 2014. The trailer supports the full, straight keel on rollers and is long enough for easy launching and trailing with the bowsprit in place. My wife and I have found it easy to launch and recover her. The boat weighs around 230 kg.I have loved owning and sailing this boat and will be sorry to see her go. I have returned to my dinghy racing heritage and just bough a new Wayfarer to race (and cruise) at my club and sadly I can’t keep two boats.Happy to show Merlin anytime.
