This is a re-listing of Scapha. The person who purchased the boat withdraw the offer. He wanted to sail her in winter back to south wales and realised that there would need to be work completed before this was possible and did not want to travel to do this.
This is truly a bargain for anyone wanting an excellent starter boat for safe sailing. The only reason for selling Scapha is a change in job location and therefore a lack of use over the last few years.
Scapha is a Cutlass 27 and is my first boat. I found her an ideal boat on which to learn to sail. She is solid and stable. The experience of skippering her gave me the qualifying miles towards my yacht master qualification. She has pretty, long and fluid lines, which denote her proven sea keeping qualities.
The Cutlass 27 was designed by Eric White of Marcon and Alan Hill, one of the pioneers of GRP yacht design, who was responsible for a wide range of successful designs including the Trident 24, Sabre 27 and Moody Halberdier. The first Cutlass 27s were built in the late 1960s and the boat remained in production until around the mid-1980s – approximately 200 are believed to have been built.
The strong, traditional design with a short counter stern and long, lead encapsulated, fixed centre keel giving a ballast ratio of over 50% ensures excellent speed and sea-keeping abilities. She carries her sail exceptionally well in a good breeze, yet remains manageable and can be sailed single-handed with ease if required.
Scapha has four births; two berth V fore cabin with shelves, windows and roof opening hatch, and two full-length births in the saloon. I have only done day sailing with 4 on board, all extended sailing was either solo or as a couple. There is a sea toilet opposite the storage cupboard which has plenty of room for boots, waterproofs etc.
The engine is a Yanmar 2GM 20 installed in 1999. The sails are old but in working order and serviceable. She has a full set of sails which although not new are in good condition and serviceable. There is a head and main sail as well as a spinnaker. The main sail has a Dutchman reefing system, which helps when solo sailing. She also comes with an anchor and 40m of chain, mooring warps and full set of fenders.
She has all the equipment you would expect for safe sailing. The saloon incorporates a galley with two burner cooker (Origo 3000), 2 sinks with cold water, storage lockers and chart table with a New VHF M-Tech 500 DSC with new aerial (connected to Garmin 230 plotter GPS) There is a compass as well as a Clipper duo and car stereo and cassette. There is a new battery isolator switch and two batteries. On desk there is the GPS and two clipper instruments as well as three lockers. The locker lids need replacing. There is no gas on board the boat.
She has been lifted every winter and has a fresh coat of antifoul. She has been on the hard for two years so will need an engine and seacock service prior to putting her back in the water.
With a little investment and a bit of time this could be the perfect boat for anyone interested in doing some extended cruising or just searching for a boat that would look after you at sea; she would comfortably cruise with a couple of people. I have sailed her for four weeks in the summer each year and had a great time in the Solent and along the south coast.
Based on the last viewing and a conversation with the boat yard Scapha had had a lot of water in the bilge, this has now been pumped out but she will need a good clean inside and possible replacement of the two batteries and some of the upholstery. As always she will need the seacocks and engine servicing before going back into the water.
