Tucker Martello 23 Sailing Boat / Yacht Project with Trailer
I think I
have to admit that after 3 lockdowns and still no time I am not going to get
this boat project done so she has to go.
This is a
Robert Tucker designed 23′ lift keel trailer sailer yacht project. It was originally designed and exhibited for the
Northern Irish boat show as a ‘finish at home’ yacht design where you get plans
and build your own interior. With a
lifting keel operated by a manual winch, she is great for shallow water sailing
and will take the bottom nicely but is very sturdy and weatherly. She takes an
outboard opening into a well though a cockpit locker for propulsion and offers
really good accommodation for a yacht her size.
She is very
wide at almost 9′ and has near 6′ headroom in the saloon, making her very
spacious for a small boat. As set up she
should have 5 berths (1 each side under the cockpit seats, one in the saloon, 2
in the forepeak although I was going to make a suitable slide out extra to make
the saloon berth a double. The cockpit
is full width so much bigger than you would normally find on a boat this size.
looks pretty bad as I got part way through stripping it out to start the
project. I have all the deck boards, cushions and lockers I removed stored in
the garage so they are available as a pattern if nothing else. She never had much in the way of electronics
or wiring and now there is basically none of that. I was going to take the opportunity to build
it as I would want it and just use them for measurements as required. I will
also include whatever other parts from the boat that I have.
I do have
the mast, rudder, standing rigging, pushpit etc, and a main and headsail. I
don’t have a boom and there will probably be various small items I
removed which I no longer have as they were not in a great state when I got her
or have since used for something else.
contact the designer about her and was sent some low resolution copies of some
of the original makers information, but I am sure you can get the real thing from
them if you want. It had the details of
the plywood bulkhead you need to make, interior woodwork etc which should be
useful for the restoration.
is solid and should be roadworthy. It has
a built on winch and is braked on the front axle although they are wire
operated and not auto-reversing (it was built before that was the law but still legal). I towed
it gently with my Range Rover which was fine although a little slow. If you are
coming from a long way away you might want to consider either putting the whole
thing on another trailer or lifting it onto a truck as you will be able to
travel much faster.
I put new
bearings and new tyres on when I moved house 5 years ago although it has only
moved around the garden a bit since then
so would benefit from a re-grease before a long trip. You are welcome to strip and re-grease the
bearings so you are content that they are good before you set off and I can
help with tools, jacks, compressor etc. The
straps you can see on it will be removed as they are in pretty poor condition
so you will need your own to strap it down, and a lighting board as the trailer
doesn’t have one.
I would like
to do this yacht as I think she has a really good look to her, and is well
proportioned unlike most small boats with decent headroom, but I need to accept
that I am not going to do it as I don’t have the time for a full renovation project.
I will need
to do a little bit of moving things in the garden so she can be got out so
would need to be collected on a weekend.
With things as they are she can stay until lockdown is lifted if you
prefer but I will ask for a 10% non refundable deposit to be paid for that as I
don’t want to hold onto it for months and then it not be collected when someone
else does want it and can come immediately.
welcome to come and have a look if you want (I live on the A37 south of Shepton
Mallet if your essential journey takes you past) or message me on 07980 623987
if you have any questions. I may not be able to answer the phone but can
usually reply to a message.
Cash or bank
transfer on collection.
