Selway Fisher designed Beaumaris 24 lug yawl, professionally
and beautifully built in 1997 by Farrow and Chambers and featured in several
magazine articles (e.g. Watercraft 3, 4 and 7 – some copies available on
request). I am her second owner and have owned her since 2006. In my ownership
(and probably before) she has been wintered ashore indoors.
Construction is 12mm “Speed Strip” cedar from Joseph
Thompson Ltd, diagonal Khaya veneers, and 300 gsm glass and epoxy. This creates
an extremely fair, light, robust, strong and totally watertight hull. Hull was
painted with two-component paint when new and has not needed repainting since.
It is hard to believe that this is the original finish. Unstayed carbon masts are
by Carbospars, inboard diesel a Yanmar 1GM10 driving a Darglow Featherstream
self-feathering propeller that gives extremely good maneuvering under power to
this stable, shoal-draft, long-keeler. This prop has asymmetric forward/reverse
pitch – to give good stopping and reversing power. The Featherstream has almost
zero drag when sailing, which makes her both faster and snappier through the
tacks. She is a dream to sail (no headsail sheets to attend to, no boom) and
surprisingly fast. There are two mainsails: one set up for brailing, one battened.
The rig is essentially a copy of Nigel Iren’s Romilly
and Roxanne; but unlike those boats she is roomy and has the lines of a
Maurice Griffiths classic, with flush decks (no side decks) giving hull strength
and good space below. With her two quarter berths and a forepeak double she can
sleep 4, if they are tidy people.
Full documentation of design and build comes with the boat.
PLOVER draws admiration wherever she goes. She has been
based in Veere (southern Netherlands) for the last 10 years and lies now in a
specialised boat storage shed/barn with Tradewind Yachts in WALSOORDEN (NL
postcode 4588 KA – 200km/2.5Hrs from
Eurotunnel terminal, slightly less from Calais). The owner of this facility Austin
Lion will happily show you round; I may return her to the UK towards the end of
the season, and would be happy to transport her for a buyer (behind my 4×4) to
the UK, by negotiation but essentially at cost, to the southeast somewhere, or
for collection from Chipping Norton, where I live.
Why sell? A bit reluctantly, but as I age I really do need
full standing headroom, which she lacks.
