Unexpectedly for sale, ‘Late Starter’ is the last of the Catalac 900s, being hull number 920. Although her hull was moulded in 1997, she was only commissioned in 2017 – a gap of 20 years, hence the name ‘Late Starter’! Her two previous owners had either financial or health problems, and when we bought her in 2016 she was essentially a shell with partially installed engines. We worked on her full time until she was ready to be launched in November 2017, and then motored her to Chichester Marina (her current location) where we continued the fitting out work. There are still a few fine finishing touches to be completed, such as interior window and door frame details, which we intended to undertake over time on our travels.
She has been fitted out to a very high standard, with the aim of creating a luxurious long-term liveaboard cruiser for two people, although it would also be possible to convert the saloon seating into a further double berth. Her exterior has been enhanced with stainless steel window surrounds, grab rails, pulpits and push pits, additional stanchions and a custom-built stern gantry supporting 560 watts of solar panel. Inside, a full wet central heating system has been installed comprising two recessed radiators, three matrixes and a thermostatic central heating programmer. This provides rapid, efficient and uniform heating throughout the boat. The system is powered by a Webasto Thermo Top C diesel heater (with separate 30 litre fuel tank), which also provides hot water to the galley and shower room. For comfort and energy efficiency, a high level of insulation has been installed throughout the boat.
The galley comprises a Dometic Starlight LPG cooker with oven, grill and two-burner hob, plus a stainless steel sink with hot and cold mixer tap, set into a custom made worktop. There is a 12v 130 litre capacity Indel Webasto Marine CR130 refrigerator with Smart Energy Control, located in the larder (originally a rear berth).
The combined shower room/heads contains a Lavac marine toilet with a Whale Gulper toilet pump providing an electric flush. There is a shower with mixer tap and Whale Gulper 220 shower waste pump, plus a stainless steel wash hand basin with mixer tap, set in a custom made worktop. Built-in waterproof storage cabinet. The pressurised water system is powered by a Jabsco 30654-1000 pump. The freshwater system is supplied by two 200 litre GRP water tanks, one in each hull.
The forecabin is a luxurious double bedroom, with king size bed and top quality pocket sprung mattress. This bed is accessible from both hulls, each with heated hanging locker. Front and side windows are screened with custom blackout roller blinds, as are the bulkhead windows between forecabin and saloon. Overhead hatches have blackout blinds and flyscreens.
The saloon comprises a u-shaped seating area, upholstered in Sunbury Design ‘Darwin’ fabric with Aquaclean technology, enabling stains to be removed with just water. Toning scatter cushions. There is a folding table (rather than fixed) for use as required, enabling freedom of movement and a greater sense of space, which stores in the wheelhouse when not in use. Custom pleated blinds are fitted to the side and front windows, with blackout blinds and flyscreens to the overhead hatches.
There is full standing headroom in both hulls and in the saloon and wheelhouse. Both hull side windows are fitted with custom Venetian blinds. LED lighting has been installed throughout the boat, together with plentiful 240v and 12v socket outlets. The boat has been lined with light oak laminate, and each hull has capacious under worktop storage with light oak laminate doors.
The wheelhouse contains the hydraulic wheel steering system with stainless steel five-spoked wheel. The autopilot is a Raymarine Evolution wheel drive. The main navigation system is a PC-based chart plotter coupled to an AIS receiver and Navtex receiver. Also a standalone Garmin GPS receiver at the navigation position in the starboard hull. There is a NASA Marine Clipper Duet log/depth sounder and a BM2 battery monitor. The VHF marine radio is a Standard Horizon Eclipse GMDSS transceiver. Plastimo Offshore 75 compass. Flyscreens to wheelhouse door and window.
Spacious cockpit with five storage lockers. Four Silvertex-covered bench cushions plus four matching scatter cushions. Heronrib floor matting.
The stern gantry houses two 280w Photonic Universe GRM-280M solar panels. These are controlled by an eTracer-BND series MPPT solar charge regulator feeding four Dyno 30XHS 130Ah deep cycle batteries. The boat is fitted with a 50amp Sterling Power Pro Charge Ultra battery charger, together with a 1800w Sterling Power Pro Power Q modified sine wave inverter. During our recent three month cruise, the solar panels easily coped with all our electrical demands with no need for shore power.
There is a dedicated gas locker built to the latest Gas-Safe specification, with bulkhead regulator and bubble tester, and with room to house a 6kg gas cylinder. The system has a full gas certificate issued in April 2018.
Although the twin Yanmar 2GM20C engines date from 2000, they remained in their original packing crates until recently installed and commissioned. They have only 200 running hours on their clock, this being comprised of a summer cruise from Chichester via the Channel Islands to Brittany and back. Each engine has its own dedicated fuel tank plus twin switchable primary fuel filters, enabling the filters to be changed while the engines are still in use. Miscellaneous engine spares included.
A furling headsail and slab reefing mainsail came with the boat when we purchased her. A new mast with new standing and running rigging was fitted in April 2018, together with new deck hardware. The mast is fitted into a deck stepped tabernacle from a Catalac 9M, allowing the mast to be lowered. Radar reflector. Tricolour masthead LED navigation light.
The lower hull was painted with four additional coats of epoxy and then Coppercoated in summer 2017.
