For sale is my 1967 Westerly W28.
Please read the full description.
She is one of only 44 ever made and designed by John Butler who also designed the Tiger and Centaur.
There were two interior designs for these boat, and this one has the rarer race interior rather than a dinette.
28ft, lead encapsulated fin keel with independently hung rudder, self bailing cockpit, 4 berth with a double bunk forward and two single bench seats/beds in the main cabin.
Also in the main cabin is the galley and a small chart table with chart light and vhf DSC radio, connected to the Garmin GPS.
She is also has a small toilet area fitted with a jabsco sea toilet
I removed her from the water 18 months ago. She was machine polished, and three good coats of Tiger Xtra antifouling applied on top of two coats of tie coat.
Lots of work has been carried out over the years with a file of receipts.
As with all things there are good bits and not so good bits, so I’ll cover the good bits first.
Fully battened Saunders sails new 5 years ago with lazy jacks, and converted to slab reefing.
Genoa is a bit older but good usable condition on a rotastay furler.
Brand new cruising shute with snuffer used twice only
Aluminium stepped mast for easy access Rigging was completely replaced in 2011
Navik wind vane self steering system which works exceptionally well on a long run.
Autohelm electric self steering system
Two brand new leisure batteries fitted charged via alternator, solar panel or 240v smart charger when along side
1kw inverter for 240v electrical items
Clipper depth sounder
Garmin GPS with external antenna
Hand held back up Garmin GPS
DSC VHF radio
Handheld vhf radio
Small Samsung smart TV included.
A full folio of solent leisure charts, channel island charts and a mix of others mainly for the south coast.
Led navigation and interior lights
Automatic bulge pump and hand pump back up.
Galley area with gas hob and grill on gymbals.
Wave line dehumidifier and small fan heater also come with the boat.
110 litre flexible water tank with electric and foot pump for the tap in the kitchen
2GM20 Yanma diesel engine which has proven to be extremely reliable, with the gearbox fully stripped and serviced by my local yanmar dealer mid 2017.
The engine is electric start but comes with the original crank handle which is often lost.
Included are basic service parts and spares.
40 litre stainless diesel tank (I motored Southampton to Guernsey on one tank)
Two anchors, one rigged to approximately 30m of chain (no windlass)
Two winch handles.
Comes with a good inflatable tender, a Mercury 2.5 outboard and oars.
The outboard will need to be serviced prior to use as it hasn’t been used for over 12 months.
There are many other small bits and bobs that make this a very complete sailing boat.
The not so good bits:
She does need some exterior cosmetic work, which I am currently in the middle of undertaking.
I have nearly finished painting the walk ways with Kiwi Grip, which is a hideously expensive grip deck paint at nearly £180 for 4 litres!
There is some outer varnishing work that needs doing though I have recently finished the tiller arm and deck boards, and will move onto the other bits once I’ve completed the deck paint.
There are a number of other small exterior jobs that I am working through currently, though it is 99% cosmetic bits.
The sail cover ripped in the strong winds earlier in the year and currently hasn’t been replaced.
The spray hood is a little worn, with some mildew staining and a few repairs here and there, but still usable.
The built in plastimo compass has lost the will to live. There are used replacements on ebay though as I tend to use the gps, navionics charts and hand held compass if needs be I didnt feel the need to replace it.
The reason for the sale is simply due to work commitments. I just dont have the time to use her or give her the level of maintenance I once did.
I’ve had many great adventures on her sailing her to France and the channel islands as well as all along the south coast. A lovely boat to sail in.
The price I’m asking reflects all of the above mentioned good and not so good bits, and is considerably less than I paid for her just over three years ago.
I wont take silly offers on her, I would rather make the time to use her rather than let it go for silly money.
That said, depending how far I get through the maintenance, there may be wiggle room for negotiation.
Please bear in mind that although she is a good solid boat (6.25 tons!) that is ready to sail away, she is now 52 years old.
She is berthed at Town Quay Marina in Southampton.
The berth may be passed on to the new owner, with the agreement of the marina and costs circa £900 per quarter.
Thanks for looking (“,)
