The Westerly Nimrod is
a small nimble sailing yacht with the easy handling of a dinghy but
with a snug cabin, draining cockpit and heavy swing keel to allow
cruising in more open water. The draft of 4ft with keel down adds stability but the keel can be progressively raised to enter shallows of less than 10 inches.
The cabin allows
camping style living aboard and, with the keel raised, can
explore creeks and inlets and dry out on mud or sand.
The full set of sails
with Mainsails, Genoa, Jibs and Spinnakers can make best use of the
conditions. She often outsails larger boats and points well.
You can see the details
of the boat in the brochure in the photos. This boat, Stroller, can
be seen in that brochure when she was first owned by her designer Ian
Proctor.
This was fitted out to
a higher level than standard. I have owner her for 43 years since then
and have had holidays and day sailed in many south coast areas from
Falmouth, the Solent and Chichester, but I now have health
constraints.
Stroller is a great 2/3
people boat but I have recently done most sailing single handed.
For launch/recovery the
mast can be hand raised by one person (with care) and the boat rolls
on-off the trailer on most slipways with only the tyres being
immersed.
The braked galvanised trailer is an
Indespension Hallmark RollerCoaster I which has a 1100kg gross rating
plate but Stroller is about 450kg if heavier items are carried in the
towing vehicle. It has a 50mm locking hitch and spare wheel. and loading winch. We
have used very modest cars to tow in the past.
There is an outboard
bracket which allows an engine to be raised clear when sailing. I am
not supplying an engine here as 2-3hp is fine in sheltered water but
I have used a 4.5hp for more exposed conditions.
There is a basic solar
powered 12v system to charge a battery through a Kemo charge
controller.
There are the useful
extras of Fenders, Warps and Danforth style Anchor.
The cabin is accessible
when on the trailer allowing its use as overnight accommodation when
trailing for a holiday cruise.
Trailer-sailers with
home parking space can avoid being locked into the costs of marinas,
boatyards, deep moorings, harbour dues that you commit to from the
day you buy to the day you sell a larger deep keel boat. (But you or
a friend need a car with modest towing capability)
Although I still wonder if there
is any way I can continue to use Stroller but she will have to go.
You are welcome to
visit to come to inspect her and I have to consider reasonable
offers.
