For sale is a Broom Rapier speed boat circa 1960s in age, no outboard included.
Its a pretty rare boat, I’ve only ever seen a couple for sale at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of condition, with mine placed between the two and priced accordingly.
It is of a timber construction and comes with its own trailer.
Both the boat and trailer have been sat in dry storage for the last
18 years, but recently (May 2024) have been taken out of dry storage due to the sale of the garage it was stored in.
The boat and trailer have both had a recent refurbishment, the boat has been re-varnished, pinstriping renewed and interior
and exterior paint re-done. Trailer has had new leaf springs fitted, new arches, all
rust removed and a fresh coat of paint applied.
Inside the boat is fitted with a Teleflex steering system and a single lever, Quicksilver throttle and gearshift control, complete with cables and electric
cut off switch to the outboard. The ends of the throttle and gearshift cables have attachments to fit a Yamaha outboard motor, which I was in the process of converting to remotes and never finished. In addition it also comes with fenders, a wet weather tarpaulin and a homemade hardtop cover to stop the tarp sagging and filling with water. There is also a windscreen that came with the boat when I bought it, not sure if its for the boat or one they just had, either way its never been fitted and I’m not sure what else it would need to be able to fit it.There is space up front inside for two adults, using a bench type seat that currently just has a couple of cushions on. In the back there is space for a fuel tank and other items you may want to carry. You could potentially squeeze a single seat in the rear section if you wanted to, depending on plans for the boat. Boat is in good condition and was used every week before it went into storage. All timber and brass work is solid and its ready to go straight in the water to use. The bow of the boat has a strip of white fiberglass and gelcoat running round it that was done to protect the fragile edges of the timber bow when mooring or landing on a bankside. Finish on the hull of the boat is a bit uneven, but not really noticeable once its in the water (see photo) When in use it used to run with a 10Hp Mercury outboard, which gave it plenty of speed and made it immense fun to drive. Also ran it with a 4hp tiller steer Mercury for a while to fish from, which still gave it plenty of power due to its lightweight construction.I have owned the boat since I was 9 years old and it is a reluctant sale, but I just don’t have the time or means to launch it anymore. As mentioned it is ready to go straight in the water. It’s a great little boat, immense fun, easy to transport,
easy to launch, steers effortlessly and with the right engine will fly. It has
a lot of potential for someone to fully restore it and had I been able to keep it that would have been my plan. Equally however it can just be used as is for decades to come.I had constant use out of it for 12 years, fishing and day tripping down the rivers Ure & Ouse. I would say its predominantly a fresh water boat due to its construction, it could go on the sea, but any large tidal swells there’s a risk the hull could be damaged with the force of the waves striking it.I do have a 7.5Hp Mercury and a 15Hp Yamaha outboard in storage that would go perfect with the boat. They are not included as I’ve no idea of their current condition or if they run. I’d need to investigate further, but its something we could look at if interested when collecting the boat.Boat is collection only as I’ve no means of transporting it myself anymore.Any questions please feel free to ask, I’m not sure on the history of it, as when we bought it, it was painted with brown gloss all over, hiding the pinstriping and timberwork. As I said I’ve owned it since I was 9 and for me once we’d cleaned it up, it was just a boat I could stick in the water and have fun with.Plenty of life left in it yet, would love to see someone fully restore it.Thanks for looking
