Healey 75 Sports Boat
This
is a Healey 75, a 4 seater Ski boat 14 ft 9inches long, made by Healey at the Cape Works
Warwick. The hull shape was copied from the USA made ‘Correct’
Craft. It has a 4 cylinder mid-mounted engine covered by a hinged hatch.
I
have owned this boat for about 15 years and it has been subject to many hours
of restoration work and research. The previous owner had also done a
considerable amount of work on it.
Hull and Deck:- The hull is fibreglass on
this Healey 75, as opposed to earlier models which were plywood. The deck
frame is mahogany and the deck itself is marine plywood. So you get the best of
both, a waterproof hull which does not rot, but with the nice wooden looking
deck.
The
deck has been replaced and also the deck frame repaired and strengthened. Deck
striping has been done to original specification. The engine hatch has been
rebuilt and re-covered in the correct marine plywood. The fuel tank is a new
stainless tank made to the original design.
Deck fittings:- These are all in place
and in very good condition and have been re-chromed. They are to the original
Healey design. Fitted with original specification Butlers searchlight and also
a bow navigation light of original design which were optional extras.
Engine:- The engine fitted is the
Austin-Healey (BMC) B series type engine. This one is 1800cc and is fitted with
twin 1.75” S.U. carburettors. (The original engine was 1600cc with smaller
carbs). It is understood the engine was overhauled by the previous owner and
not used since. It had new pistons, bearings, camshaft, timing chain, exhaust
valves etc. Some of the early inboard engine boats (55’s) were a bit underpowered for
water-skiing with a single carburettor; The 75 used in the
boat name refer to the engine horse power output at 4500rpm; and should tow a skier with ease.
Transmission:- Borg Warner Velvet Drive.
This is an American supplied forward/reverse gearbox
Controls:- New fibreglass moulded dash panel
to the original design with Smiths instruments and correct switches. Hand
throttle, hand gear change, original type steering wheel. Organ type original throttle
pedal.
Vintage
Belfast Whale bilge pump and period fire extinguisher for show only.
During
the restoration I have tried to keep the boat as original as possible. I
believe it to be now very close to the original specification.
It
has not been used since the restoration, and I now need the space in the
garage.
This
boat comes with a few extras like old lifejackets, fenders, oars, boat hook,
anchor etc.
