1980 Sims Super V Jet Boat

With Ford 1600 CVH inboard circa 80bhp and PP Jet drive
unit.

The boat has been completely stripped and re-built.

A very rare British built craft from the Doug Sims factory,
built from the mid 70’s through to early 80’s. Lots of them were configured for
outboard engines but some were built with a completely different rear section
to house an inboard engine. Most were fitted with a Ford of some description and
of those inboard variants a limited number were fitted with the PP Jet drive
unit. You might perhaps see another somewhere on the south coast but they are a
rare find.

The jet drive does mean that it will operate in shallow
water and its quick, they make excellent ski boats.

When I bought it back in 2014, it was a mess and had been
left open to the elements for years lying in a Dartmouth boat yard. I love a
project to work on as a hobby and I’ve spent quite a few thousand and lots of
hours re-building it over the last few years but I no longer have the time to
finish it and other priorities always get in the way. So, it’s been sat
un-finished for a year with me not finding any more time to complete it and
therefore reluctantly I have taken the decision to let the Sims go to another
owner to complete. It doesn’t want much to finish it off and when you do, you’ll
have lovely, rare pocket-rocket for the water.

Deck & Hull

The hull is in very good un-damaged condition i.e. no holes
or repairs, apart from the usual minor gel coat chips to the keel. The deck has
no damage repairs at all and the topsides have been re-painted in candy-apple
red. The 4 small holes on the top rear corner are for a flag pole mount which I did not yet replace. New stainless-steel parts – fuel filler, exhaust port, water
outlet and mooring cleats.

Interior

The interior of the boat was stripped, jet washed and
painted to form a new base to work from. The floor is covered in anti-slip foam
vinyl. The seats have been stripped, re-built and re-upholstered in marine foam
& vinyl, grey and gold.

Electrics

The boat has been 100% re-wired with new fuse box, ignition
system & coil, switches and dash clocks. New battery box, in fact new
everything electrically.

Engine

The engine mounts are original but the bushes are new.

The 1600 CVH engine block was professionally stripped and completely
re-built, with new bearing shells, piston rings, oil seals, oil pump, water
pump etc. The sump was cleaned, new oil strainer fitted. The cylinder head was
re-skimmed, valves re-ground/seated, new oil seals, new fuel pump, new timing
belt. New 130A alternator, new electronic distributor & HT cables, new
starter motor.

The intake manifold has no cracks or damage and was
chemically cleaned and came up like new. It takes a standard 34 Ford/Weber
carburettor but unfortunately the old carb was beyond saving. You could swop
the manifold to take a XR2/XR3 twin venturi carburettor unit to gain a further
10hp if you wanted to, they can be found on Ebay.

The engine turns over on the ignition switch & start
button, so ignition wise its ready to go. There is an 80A battery supplied with
it but its several years old.

The 1.6 CVH engines are highly sought after now and parts
are becoming scarce. This re-built unit must now be worth in the region of
£1,000.

Jet Drive

The PP Jet drive unit was dismantled, powder coated and
re-built with new bearings and the prop refurbished. The intake strainer was
also stripped and powder coated. All bolts and fixings are 316 grade stainless
steel. The coupler unit from the engine to drive unit is the original albeit I
have replaced the bolts. There is a bright orange prop bag to cover it in
transit.

Water Cooling

The original raw water cooler was cleaned and reinstalled
with new hoses, in fact all the cooling hoses are new. Replacement Ford
electric raw water pump with new in-line filter/strainer.

Fuel

The original aluminium fuel tank was dipped in an acid bath
and re-painted. It’s been tested for leaks and there are none. A new sender
unit has been fitted & new fuel lines.

Steering & Control Cables

Basically, all new. The Teleflex steering unit is heavy-duty
and rated for 200hp. New splash well tube kits. The forward/reverse and
throttle control unit were stripped, painted, re-bushed & re-built. The
throttle cable is new as is the forward/reverse cable.

Trailor & Cover

The original trailer was scrap and not worth saving, so I
bought the current one second-hand from a company in Birmingham. It’s rated to 1600kg
with brake assist so its over-spec’d for the Sims and will carry something far
heavier. It cost me about £1,000. The tyres are good with plenty of tread, the
brakes work fine and the wheel bearings don’t squeal. The rollers are new and
there is a new lighting board. There is a general-purpose boat cover with it,
which is adequate for storage.

What it needs to finish

·
A Weber carburettor – available new on Ebay for
about £300.

·
Pan or box air filter kit – available new on
Ebay for about £150.

·
A small retainer bracket needs to be sourced or
made to secure the throttle cable to the manifold.

·
The carburettor will need setting up by a
mechanic.

·
A water-cooled exhaust manifold – I had a quote
of about £800 to make one or they are available from EJ Bowman in Birmingham.
